Named after its most notorious practitioner, the phenomenon known as McCarthyism destroyed lives and careers. But how did this episode of political repression take off? Ellen Schrecker traces the history of McCarthyism. Lesson by Ellen Schrecker, animation by Patrick Smith.

Today we kick off Crash Course Sociology by explaining what exactly sociology is. We’ll introduce the sociological perspective and discuss how sociology differentiates itself from the other social sciences. We’ll also explore what sociology can do, and how a concern with social problems was at the center of sociology's beginnings. Crash Course is made with Adobe Creative Cloud. Why Do We Have Such Crooked Teeth?

84 Views0 Comments

A lot of humans need or want braces to fix their crooked teeth, but why do you never see a dog walking down the street with headgear? Our ancient ancestors and mac and cheese may be to blame! *Correction: Even though hyraxes look similar to rodents, they're actually in the order Hyracoidea, not Rodentia! They're more closely related to elephants and manatees than to mice and guinea pigs.* Hosted by: Hank Green ---------- Learn more about the March for Science: https://www.marchforscience.com/ Knowledge Is Power Merch: https://store.dftba.com/collections/scishow Support SciShow by becoming a patron on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/scishow ---------- Dooblydoo thanks go to the following Patreon supporters—we couldn't make SciShow without them! What happens when you put 20,000 volts into a Watermelon?

68 Views0 Comments

What happens when you pump 20,000 joules into a watermelon? Two words. Pink Mist. After trying to blow up a watermelon with a smaller capacitor, my friend coyt brought over 4 capacitors rated at 20kv and 25uf each. They came from a lab that used to them to simulate the effects of lightning on materials, so this is basically like what would happen if a lightning bolt struck a watermelon! One cool thing I did not point out in the video, is the plasma vortex that happens when we shock the steak the second time. It shoots towards my GoPro. I tried some other things, like wrapping wire around beer bottles caps to see if the shockwave from an exploding wire would open the caps, but the wire kept shorting on itself and it never worked because it never went all the way around the cap. I also tried woodburning with the electricity, but the bolt just travels on the surface of the wood, not inside it, even when soaked in saltwater. Thanks for my friends Coyt and Brandon, my Brother Riley, and my Girlfriend Sandra for hanging out. And thanks to my neighbor for not calling the cops after all! All Slow motion was filmed on the Chronos 1.4 High Speed Camera :)

Do I Have ADHD?

60 Views0 Comments

Just something I've been thinking about for a while. How to Know if you have ADHD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx13a2-unjE SciShow Psych http://www.youtube.com/scishowpsych I am very lucky to have found myself (and gotten myself) in a situation that is well suited to the quirks of my personality. But I still find myself sometimes unintentionally hurting people, annoying people, or letting people down even though I often know the exact mistake I am making. I'm not saying that means I have ADHD, I just want to continue to understand the mistakes I make, that I am prone to making them, and develop habits to stop myself. This channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-nPM1_kSZf91ZGkcgy_95Q is full of tips I find useful, and there are a number of habits I've developed on my own. Finally, here's a thing I didn't say in the video. I've struggled with worrying that if I get diagnosed, I will blame the disorder instead of myself and let that excuse my behavior. I know that's dumb, because if I'm being impaired by something, I should know and take the steps to reduce that impairment. But part of me always wants to believe that I'm strong and smart enough to handle any curve ball I get thrown without letting myself or other people down. I think that might be a pretty destructive way to look at it, which is why I'm glad I've allowed myself to get support from friends, family, and professionals over the years. ---- Subscribe to our newsletter! http://nerdfighteria.com/newsletter/ And join the community at http://nerdfighteria.com http://effyeahnerdfighters.com Help transcribe videos - http://nerdfighteria.info John's twitter - http://twitter.com/johngreen John's tumblr - http://fishingboatproceeds.tumblr.com Hank's twitter - http://twitter.com/hankgreen Hank's tumblr - http://edwardspoonhands.tumblr.com

Welcome to Crash Course World Mythology, our latest adventure (and this series may be literally adventurous) in education. Over the next 40 episodes or so, we and Mike Rugnetta are going to learn about the world by looking at the foundational stories of a bunch of different cultural traditions. We’re going to look at the ways that people’s stories define them, and the ways they shape their culture. We’re going to learn about gods, goddesses, heroes, and tricksters, and a lot more. We’re going to walk the blurry line between myth and religion, and we’re going to like it. Crash Course is made with Adobe Creative Cloud. In biology, this is one of a fundamental question that we still don’t have a very good answer for. Imagine if chemists didn’t know all the elements of the periodic table, or if physicists didn’t know all of the particles of the standard model. Knowing how many different species there are is information we need to know in order to protect the environment, but it’s a lot harder than you think! How Young Is History?

75 Views0 Comments

In which John Green considers the historical distance between Rome's Pantheon, the cave paintings at Lascaux, a different community's cave paintings at Chauvet, and the current day. Too often, we think that a hundred years, or a thousand, can tell us the whole story or history or art history. But cave paintings remind us that what we think of as history is a tiny fraction of the human story. HUGE THANKS to Rosianna for helping with all the images: http://youtube.com/rosianna Werner Herzog made a beautiful documentary about the Chauvet paintings called Cave of Forgotten Dreams. You happen to be standing next to a switch that will divert the trolley onto a second track. Here’s the problem: that track has a worker on it, too — but just one. What do you do? Do you sacrifice one person to save five? Eleanor Nelsen details the ethical dilemma that is the trolley problem. Lesson by Eleanor Nelsen, animation by Eoin Duffy.

What Is the Real Unemployment Rate?

58 Views0 Comments

In which John Green discusses the "real" unemployment rate in the United States, and how different ways of calculating jobless rates have led to vastly different conclusions about the health of the U.S. economy. SOURCES BELOW! Other questions addressed include: What is the difference between the U1 unemployment rate and the U6 unemployment rate? Which one is the better measure of unemployment? What percentage of Americans are employed? And what percentage of those unemployed are looking for work? And what does it all say about the present and future of the U.S. economy, and our divisive political discourse? Thank you to Rosianna for all the charts and graphs! http://youtube.com/rosianna The information in this video came from: 1. Trading Economics has great and visually intuitive explanations of the U-3 unemployment rate over time in the United States: http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-states/unemployment-rate 2. When cats get a whiff of nepetalactone, most will start rubbing themselves against it, playing around with it, sometimes eating it, and generally will act quite bizarrely. It is thought, but not known exactly, that this chemical mimics certain feline pheromones, specifically their theoretical facial pheromones (it isn’t known whether these actually exist, but many researchers think so, which is why cats probably like to rub their faces on various things).
